About Pecan Plantation, Texas

 

The land that is now Pecan Plantation residential community and the Leonard Bend Store and Anthony Orchards once belonged to the Comanche Indians for hunting and camping. A historic surveyor, Jacob deCordova, mapped the areas around Hood Country such as the deCordova Bend and many other areas of the early Texas republic. The property was abandoned for many years and eventually settled by the Kristen family. By the 1930s, the settlement had failed. A prominent Fort Worth businessman, O.P. Leonard bought the property in 1949 with plans of a large pecan and peach orchard. The land turned into one of the largest pecan and peach orchards in the United States. In 1969, Lake Granbury opened and changed the dynamic of the area. Leonard family members formed the Republic Land Company to develop a subdivision on the lake. Roughly 800 acres of the orchard were sold for the creation of the Pecan Plantation residential community. The community opened a country club, golf course, airport, and other recreational areas were opened in 1971 followed by the Pecan Plantation Owners Association forming. The land was donated for a second golf course, Nutcracker Golf Club. The Pecan Plantation community now has about 3,200 residential lots. The Pecan Plantation Owners Association is now committed to maintaining the unique setting of the residential community.
